Rams Eliminate 49ers, Set Stage for Winner Take All Primetime Game

The Seahawks have a long flight back from Tampa Bay after losing 38-15 Sunday. But this isn't about what happened in Tampa Bay. This isn't about the fact that Seattle has been in a total free fall, losing seven of their last nine games. This is about one thing, and one thing only; playoffs.

Regardless of what has happened this season, it all comes down to 60 minutes in Seattle on January 2nd. The winner of next week's matchup between the St. Louis Rams and the Seattle Seahawks will clinch the NFC West title, and will earn the right to host a playoff game the following weekend, while the loser's season will come to a cruel end. This is all thanks to the Rams, who eliminated the 49ers Sunday with a 25-17 win in St. Louis. If the Rams had lost today, the Seahawks would not only need to beat the Rams next week, but would also need Arizona to beat San Francisco. But now, these two teams control their own destiny.

Before the season started, if you had told Seahawks fans that they would be in position to win the division going into the final game of the year, they would have probably looked at you funny. If you had told the same thing to a Rams fan, they would have thought you were just plain crazy. Yes, these two teams that will fight for the division title next weekend are the same teams that finished 3rd and 4th in the division last season (The Seahawks finished 5-11, while the Rams finished 1-15). The source to the turnaround is easy to spot on both sides. The Seahawks got rid of Jim Mora, who had lost the respect of his team, and replaced him with a passionate coach that truly understood his players. Enter the Pete Carroll era. He made an immediate impact in the NFL Draft, as many experts said that Seattle had the best draft in the league, landing college stars such as Russell Okung, Earl Thomas, Golden Tate, and Walter Thurmond. The turnaround of the St. Louis Rams can also credit their turnaround to their draft. With the #1 pick, they selected Sam Bradford, the coveted quarterback from Oklahoma. He would immediately become the face of the franchise, and as of now, he is one of only two quarterbacks in the league who has taken every single snap for his team. Bradford led the Rams to a miracle turnaround, and in just one year, they have gone from being the laughing stock of the league to division contenders.

As if the stage wasn't big enough next week in Seattle, the NFL just announced the game will be moved from the original 1:15 PST kickoff time on Fox to 5:20 PST on NBC. It is the first primetime game for the Seahawks all season. Not only will a division crown be at stake, but the entire nation will be watching. For these two teams, destiny awaits.

Seahawks In Best Position to Win NFC West

There are currently seven different playoff scenarios in what is unanimously agreed upon as the weakest division in football, the NFC West. Luckily for the Seahawks, it is not as complicated for them to reach the postseason for the first time since 2007. What do they have to do? Just win. If the Seahawks beat Tampa Bay and St. Louis, they will win the NFC West with a record of 8-8. Four of the seven scenarios would crown the Seahawks as NFC West Champs. Two of those scenarios that put the Hawks in the playoffs involve winnig out. So what about the other two? As farfetched as it sounds, the Seahawks could actually lose to Tampa Bay next week, and with some help from the Rams and Cardinals, could still win the division. So follow closely and take a break for some Tylenol if needed, because this gets tricky.

If the Seahawks lost to Tampa Bay, but beat St. Louis, a Cardinals win over the 49ers would result in the Seahawks winning the division with a 7-9 record, and St. Louis and San Francisco would finish 6-10. Now, if Seattle lost to Tampa Bay, beat St. Louis, and St. Louis beat San Francisco, the Seahawks and Rams would finish with identical records. So how does the league decide who goes to the playoffs? NFL rules state that in the case of two teams having identical overall records, the tiebreaker goes to the team with the stronger head to head record. In a case such as this, the Seahawks and Rams would split the season series with a win each. When the head to head record is also a tie, the tiebreaker goes to the team with the stronger divisional record. In this second scenario, the Seahawks would finish with a 4-2 record in the NFC West, and the Rams would finish with a 3-3 divisional record. Advantage Seattle.

However, a Seattle loss to Tampa Bay along with a San Francisco win over St. Louis would put the 49ers in the driver seat for the division. All San Francisco would have to do it that situation would be to beat the last place Cardinals in the final week of the season, and the 49ers would win the division with a 7-9 record. Right now, San Francisco's strong divisional record of 3-1 is just about the only thing keeping them afloat.

The Rams also control their destiny. If St. Louis wins out, they will clinch the NFC West with an 8-8 record. The Rams are also in a similar position as Seattle, where they could actually lose to San Francisco, and then a win over Seattle the final week paired with a San Francisco loss to the Cardinals would put the Rams in the playoffs with a 7-9 record. This weekend for both the Rams and 49ers, it will be the biggest game for the two teams since they last reached the postseason. The Rams last reached the playoffs in 2004 when they clinched a wild card birth with an 8-8 record. The 49ers haven't played a postseason game since 2002 when they won the division with a 10-6 record.

So what will next week's game between the Rams and 49ers mean for the Seahawks? If the Rams win, the 49ers are eliminated, and regardless of what happens against Tampa Bay, it will set the stage for the biggest game at Qwest Field since the playoffs three seasons ago. The winner will clinch the NFC West and host a playoff game the next weekend. The loser goes home and will watch that game from the couch. If the 49ers beat St. Louis however, things get a little more complicated. If the 49ers went on to beat Arizona the next week, Seattle would have to also win out to clinch the division. The equation is simple in that scenario. Two San Francisco wins plus one Seattle loss equals elimination. However, if the 49ers beat St. Louis, but lost to Arizona, that would bring us back to the winner take all scenario between the Rams and Seahawks on January 2nd in Seattle.

As of right now, the Seahawks have a 50% chance of winning the division, while the 49ers and Rams both have a 25% chance. So buckle up, these last two weeks of the season are sure to provide some fireworks. It's still anyones division. Criticize the NFC West for being perhaps the weakest division in professional sports if you must, but there is no denying this will be a thrilling finish that comes down to the final moments of the season.

Is Forsett the future in Seattle?

The Seahawks have primarily been a pass-first team over the last decade, but they may have found their secret ingredient in the backfield with second-year tailback Justin Forsett, who matched his season total in only one game in Arizona.

Not only can the sophomore shine as a return specialist, but he’s been handed a bigger role in the running game since Edgerrin James’ release and made a smooth transition with his dynamic speed.

A dazzling 123-yard performance in a 31-20 loss to the Cardinals showed off the kind of impact the California product can make in Seattle’s struggling offense that could use any boost it can take at this point.

The 27th-ranked run offense hasn’t been productive at all amidst a disappointing 3-7 season with only 93 yards per game on the ground through ten games in 2009. The emergence of Forsett as a reliable running back could help the Seahawks compliment their 13th-best passing attack.

Julius Jones, the Seattle’s feature rusher, was limited to only 10 yards on two carries before being forced to sit out with a bruised lung. It handed Forsett an opportunity to show off his talent, and the 233rd overall pick from the 2008 NFL Draft impressed on his 17 carries – one of which went for a touchdown on an 11-yard run to open the scoring.

Unfortunately, after jumping out to a 14-0 lead, the Seahawks only could muster two more field goals and failed to preserve the win in a key divisional game they desperately needed.

However, Forsett was a shining star in his first 100-yard game in the NFL and has a bright future in Seattle. And while the team might continue to struggle during their remaining six games with a make-shift offensive line, injecting Forsett’s speed into the offense will certainly help diversify a pretty one-dimensional offense.

Is it over for the Seattle Seahawks this year?

Before I try to answer that question, let's talk about this past Sunday's game against last years NFC West Division Champions, the Arizona Cardinals. Both teams needed a win, but for very different reasons. Arizona wanted to keep its two game lead over those pesky San Francisco 49ers and the Seahawks were trying to get back into the hunt after a very unimpressive first half of the season. Both teams brought all they had to this contest. Each team had strong running games. Especially Seattle who after losing Julius Jones to a broken rib in the first quarter, brought in Justin Forsett who ran for a scrappy 123 yards against a very good Arizona defense ranked 4th in the league against the run.

Looking at the game stats alone it would have been very hard to tell who won this game. A flip of the coin really, with both teams rushing for over 120 yards, both teams passing for over 300 yards and the final total being only only a 10 yard difference for total offense. Time of possesion was nearly the same and a case could be made that in most categories, Seattle came out on top. Except for that one little diffference: Turnovers. Matt Hasselback threw 2 interceptions and Kurt Warner had none. Which is where the difference really became apparent as I watched this game. Don't get me wrong, it probably was the best game I've seen all year from the Seahawks. Shutouts are fun to watch but a tough well fought game is much better!

Here is where I leave stats and start talking opinions.

Kurt Warner is a cyborg! I keep expecting him to show up on the new T.V. show "V". He looks human but he doesn't act like one. Even when his team was down in the first quarter and they couldn't do better than 3 and out, he looked as if everything was going according to plan. He stayed in the pocket and just waited it out until one of his many targets became free. He never got sacked and was hurried only a few times. I haven't seen someone with that much free time since my oldest daughter lost her cell phone and her i-pod in the same week. Although Kurt has a hot / cold streak in him, he is a very dangerous and accurate quarterback when given the chance.

On the flip side, there is something wrong with Matt Hasselback. I don't mean that in a derogatory way. Matt is clearly one of the best quarterbacks in the league. He is great at reading defenses and changing plays on the fly. It's not his personality. Believe me, I can't think of any NFL star that I would rather hang out with after a home group Bible study, but there is something not quite right about his health. Matt is a fighter and I can't imagine going out there each week and taking those hits like he does. He took 4 sacks on Sunday with sore ribs and a sore shoulder. It must be like standing on the freeway at rush hour and praying you don't get run over. I know he wants to win and I know he knows how important he is to the franchise, but you watch, as soon as it is mathematically impossible for the Seahawks to get into the post season you will see Seneca Wallace starting. And here is why.

This is a rebuilding year for the Seahawks. No one in the organization will admit this. No one ever will. With a new head coach, coaching staff and run system, even the old veterans are going back to school in a sense. This season is as much about building on the future as it is about winning games this season. The more disciplined zone running approach that has been brought in takes time to understand and implement. Many of the decisions made by the coaching staff are decisions that take time to execute well. It doesn't mean that the staff and front office thought this was a throw-away year. On the contrary, Jim Mora and his staff want to win and win now! Coach Mora is a no-excuse style of coach that demands progress every week and is getting it. I can't remember the last season I enjoyed watching the coaching staff as much as I have this year. Injuries aside, this staff has done a terrific job moving players around, getting new bodies in and motivating the players to continue to learn and grow.

This brings me back to my original question. Is it over for the Seattle Seahawks this year? To answer this, you must be more specific. Is the question: Will the seahawks make the playoffs this year? The answer is probably not. It's not impossible, but it is unlikely. Nothing would please me more than seeing them get a wildcard spot or better yet, winning the division, but let's be honest for a moment. It's not likely. However, there is something about this team and the coaches that makes me excited to watch the remainder of the season. I won't miss a game! There is something brewing on this team. There is a giant being crafted and you shouldn't miss watching it develop right before your eyes. I predict the Seattle Seahawks team will fight to the death every game for the rest of the season. I never get the sense that this team is willing to quit. It's one of the reasons I am proud to be a Seahawks fan. Which leads me to my last point.

Someone a few weeks ago asked me about the 12th man. Their question specifically was "why are fans so in love with a team that has the ups and down of the Seahawks?" I don't know if he understood my explanation but here is what I told him. And if any Seahawk coaches or management are by some miracle reading this column, listen up.

Seahawks fans are about quality as much as quantity. Don't get me wrong, we enjoy a winning season as much as the next guy painted up in his team colors, but it goes much deeper than that. Seattle Seahawks fans want a team they can be proud of, off the field as much as on the field. We want a team that doesn't give up and will play clean smash-mouth football every time they step on the field. But the most important word in that last sentence is "clean". Seattle fans demand their football team be as classy as they are tough. Each year, when the free agent lists are announced there are always one or two star players that are known as trouble-makers. You know the type, a problem in the locker room or someone with poor judgement off the field. Seahawk fans can't tell you which team these players will end up on, but they can tell you which team they won't be coming to, the Seattle Seahawks. We are crazy about our team because we are proud of them. Not just as football players but as men. We will always be out there supporting them because they are the kind of people we can stand behind. Want to see the 12th man go away? Change the character of this team and you will. Continue the longstanding tradition of quality men and quality players and we will be there win or lose.

Is it over for the Seahawks this year? Not a chance. We will get better and stronger and fight until the last whistle is blown. Believe it. Thanks guys, for a great game this last week. Now, let's get ready for Favre and the Vikings!
